    I'm confused by when to use "do" and when to use "make". I heard someone say, "I'll do the coffee and you do the toast". Is this correct?

    A:Dear Pedro,


    The verb "do" is used to express daily activities or jobs. For example, "do housework" or "do the dishes." Expressions with "do" don't usually produce a physical object. Whereas the verb "make" expresses an activity that creates something you can touch, such as coffee or food. You "make food" and "make a cup of coffee or tea". So "I'll do the coffee" is incorrect and should be "I'll make the coffee". My advice? Don抰 believe everything you hear!

    I am staying in a host family in the state of Iowa in the United States. My host family is very nice but one thing I do not understand is why my host sister is always saying "whatever". Can you please explain what this is meaning, Mike, and what do I say if she says this to me?

    A:Dear Sachiko,


    The meaning of "whatever" depends on the context. But it sounds like your host-sister may be using it as a way to show her indifference to something you or someone said. For example, if you say, "You look nice to today" and she says "whatever" in response, it means that she's trying to make it seem like she doesn't really care what you think. She might actually care, but she doesn't want to show it. The frequent use of "whatever" is a common phenomenon amongst the younger American generation. It's probably nothing against you so don't worry about it too much. The next time she says "whatever" to you, try saying "whatever to you too!"
